Calm Palm Seascape
A quiet shoreline moment with waves breaking gently under a summer sky.
Artwork by Catherine Knee
It has been a long time since I have tried to paint something, and it shows! This morning I reckoned it was high time I had another go. I can’t learn if I don’t do, after all!
Today’s painting was inspired by a video I saw on TikTok. I’m still very much in the stage of learning techniques and drawing inspiration from other people’s work rather than creating entirely from my own imagination, so I decided to give this idea a try.
There are parts of the piece I really like, and parts I’m less than thrilled about, but that’s the whole point of this blog: it’s about my journey, not about being perfect. In the future, we will all look back and giggle at the older work and you will all get to share my joy at my improvement!
One of my favourite parts of this picture is the colour of the sand. I mixed blue, yellow, burnt sienna, and white to get a shade I really love. Maybe because the colour has a hint of chocolate in it!.
The sea also came out beautifully, for me at least, and the first time I have liked my waves in a painting. I mixed a greeny-blue tone using blue, yellow, and white, with lighter accents to bring it to life. I’m genuinely happy with how my waves look breaking on the shore. Winner!
On the less successful side… my palm tree looks like a demented tarantula on LSD, and I’m not pleased with the sun at all. But that’s okay! That is what learning is all about. Both are indicators of where I can improve, and the sea has inspired me to maybe try a pure seascape next time.
As always, I painted with acrylics on an 8x10 inch canvas from The Art Shop in Skipton. I love their 8x10 canvases! They’re a perfect size for experimenting and learning, and because they are flat as well, the take up so little space to store.
I feel like I learned how to handle the sea, and today was the first time I properly tried to mix colours for myself, so the colours of teh sea and sand… a big fat yes from me. Failure? Maybe as an image, but still, I am so pleased with what I learned and really want to have another go at a seascape another day!
